The Mural Painting Process

How to paint a mural step by step?

As a professional mural and trompe l’oeil artist, I am bringing a wealth of knowledge with over 35 years experience and completing over 450 projects in 7 countries. My enthusiasm for achieving exceptional results has been my driving force.

It does not matter how big or small a mural commission is as long as it is done well and complimenting in every way the interior it’s painted in.

I am based in London but complete mural commissions all over the UK and internationally.

Studio Painted Murals and Marouflage Installation

In some cases the mural commission can be painted on synthetic canvas in the studio and shipped to any destination and fixed to the wall by mouraflage technique.

Scheduling and Project Planning

The next step is arranging a date and giving an idea of how much time to complete the project. For larger mural commissions I have various assistants all skilled in the different aspects of faux finishes and trompe l’oeil.

Preparing the Walls

The walls the murals are going to be painted on need to be in good condition and referably with a base coat of emulsion paint, in the case of Chinoiserie murals the base coat can be the colour of the background saving time and money.

Initial Consultation and Costing

Once I have the dimensions of the area where the mural is to be painted and I have an idea what is to be achieved as to style, theme and content, I can, if required, give a rough costing.

Scaled Drawing and Accurate Quotation

The next step is to do a scaled drawing. This is important to do for an accurate quotation, up to this point there is absolutely no charge for the drawing or quotation. I can also if practical do a site visit free of charge.

The Process From Conception to Completion

It is useful to see any images or references to start a dialogue to ascertain the inspiration and feel of the area the mural is going to be painted, and to receive photos of the space is a great help to achieve that.

Materials, Care and Professional Assurance

The paint that is used is non toxic water based acrylic with care being taken to keep the area clean and I hold public liability insurance to cover all artistic work.
