The Cost of Mural Painting in the UK

The cost of a hand-painted mural depends on the artist’s experience and expertise, the size of the area and the level of detail involved. Location, access and the complexity of the design also influence the final price.

As a guide, mural painting can start from around £150 per square metre, with more detailed work costing considerably more. Residential commissions typically range from £800 to £5,000, while larger private or commercial mural projects can range from £3,000 to £20,000, depending on the brief.

Every commission is different, so these figures are a starting point. A quotation based on your space and proposed design will give you a clearer picture.

Discussing Your Mural and Budget

The first step is a conversation about what you have in mind. Images and references help establish the theme, style and atmosphere you would like to create. To provide an initial estimate, I usually need: Approximate dimensions of the wall or ceiling. Photographs of the space, showing its style and lighting. Any images or references that reflect your ideas. The location of the project and, if you have one, an approximate budget.

How I Calculate the Cost of a Mural

I begin by assessing the detail involved and estimating how much I can paint in a day. I then calculate the time required using my daily rate and cross-check this against the cost per square metre of comparable murals. This approach takes account of the work involved: a softly painted sky and an intricate trompe l’oeil architectural scene may cover the same area but require very different amounts of time.

The first step is a conversation about what you have in mind.
Images and With this information, I can give you an indication of cost. If necessary, we can explore ways to adapt the design to suit your budget, perhaps by simplifying the detail or concentrating the painting on a smaller area. This is a flexible discussion, allowing us to establish what is achievable before moving on to the drawing stage. As a London-based mural artist, I undertake commissions throughout the UK and internationally.

Do I Offer a Daily Rate?

I can provide a daily rate where appropriate, particularly for smaller projects or when working as part of a team on a commercial commission. For a complete mural, I generally provide a fixed quotation so that you know the agreed cost before painting begins.

A Free Scaled Drawing and Fixed Quotation

Once we have established the direction of the design and an approximate budget, I prepare a detailed scaled drawing free of charge. When the drawing is approved, I provide a comprehensive, all-inclusive quotation for the agreed work. The quoted price remains fixed, even if the painting takes longer than expected, provided there are no substantial changes to the approved design or scope. You can read more about the stages involved on my Process page.
