The Tallest Tree Mural

The Tallest Tree Mural

The summer of 2021 has been a busy period for me painting murals.
It would seem that after the lockdown with many families not having been able to travel and
spending time confined to the house that they had got inspired to make their living space more
exciting.

As soon as the sun began to shine the phone began to ring, mostly well to do families in the
stockbroker belt surrounding London with new ideas to artistically adorn their walls.

The most popular theme has been the old favorite chinoiserie murals, which allow one to paint
an oriental type decorative mural usually on a feature wall, fantastic for the mural artist as it
allows for loose creativity within a safe established margin.

Within the remits were some original themes, a few of which I have written about in previous
blogs including a very challenging backdrop with a classical mural these were alongside
preparing for an exhibition in Brighton.

Unusually a few of the mural commissions over this period have been local to my area within
walking distance this should not be really surprising as there are many splendid period houses
in south London.

One of these local inquiries was from a young family that lived in the same
street as some good friends, a beautiful modernized house with an exotic garden with oversized
plants and palm trees. It seems that during her maternity leave the client got inspired to do a
mural on a wall that transcended two flights to her office space in the loft, a large space doing
nothing.

After some reflection she decided that the most joyful subject matter would be something from
nature, particular to the house, with its lovely garden, a tree.

When she contacted me I was not sure it was something that would suit my style which is to do
detailed murals and especially if this tree was going to fill the space which was over 5 meters
high, I tentatively suggested that there were artists who worked quicker and with less detail than
myself but having seen my website she was happy for me to spend the time to get a splendid
result.

After submitting a scaled drawing and pondering on how to access and paint a mural in a
confined space 5.37 meters high which needed to be accessed throughout the three week
period it would take to paint it.

The bottom half was painted from a ladder precariously accessed from the stairs and for the top half we built a secure platform supported on one side by two
metal acros allowing for passage in between.

The mural was successfully completed in the three-week time frame and is the tallest vertical
uninterrupted mural I have completed.
