21 Feb Hand Painted Chinoiserie Murals Painted Individually for the Client
I am about to add a new page to my website, it is headed Hand painted chinoiserie murals painted individually for the client.
As a mural artist I was originally inspired by the frescoes of Pompeii and old hand painted wallcovering of chinoiserie style. The earliest examples of chinois wallcoverings found in old classic country homes or grand London townhouses often featured groups of Chinese figures going about everyday activities of fishing or hunting or carrying goods to market. In the background of these scenes would be stylised hills or Chinese houses of that period, the background was usually a muted brown but could be in reds or even a muted pink.
I was inspired by these beautiful exotic early wallcoverings and had to wait many years to paint murals including my own interpretation and even now would like to do more in depth murals featuring figurative figures.
Throughout recent history for religious reasons and decorative, themes foliage of some sort has been more popular than anything figurative, whole rooms of chinoiserie/oriental themes have covered the walls with blossoms of every colour.
The fashion for Chinoiserie mural wallcovering can be noticed in practically every period drama series in fashionable London or countryside houses, most contemporary commissioned murals are for feature walls or restricted areas like panels.
The great advantage for the designer or client commissioning a mural artist to paint chinoiserie onto the walls is the freedom to pick and choose the exact subject matter and colour palette and personalise the mural to suit the individual’s interior and taste.
My new webpage will show many examples and different subject matter in Eastern/Oriental style, sometimes using more exotic material such as gold or silver or painted directly onto canvas in the studio, hopefully there will be enough to inspire both designers and clients to commission me to paint something special.
